The 200 marks a new era for the American-made sedan. “This wasn’t so much a remodeling of the Sebring as it is a new model in its own right,” said Holden. “Much of the exterior has been redesigned in a major overhaul. Perhaps the weakest part of the Chrysler and Dodge brands' lineups have long been midsized sedans. This is not so much because the products are lacking, but because they're up against the strongest cars some other brands have — the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion, Mazda6, Chevrolet Malibu, the excellent Hyundai Sonata and its near-twin, the Kia Optima.

Consequently, dealers typically had to discount the 2010 Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger to keep them moving. Although the Sebring was a relatively young design, Chrysler decided to accelerate its planned makeover, and for 2011 we get the Chrysler 200. Yes, there are still bits and pieces shared with last year's Sebring, but there's a lot new — the nose and the rear, the fenders, the grille, the hood, the trunk lid and the lights. Inside, the cockpit has been updated. And under the hood, there's a new engine offered — a 3.6-liter, 283-horsepower V-6 replacing the 3.5-liter.

The 2011 Chrysler 300 is not an all-new car. Execs on hand at the vehicle's launch here in San Diego, Cali. called it a machine sent to, "finishing school." A prime example: The rear-drive chassis originally sourced from Mercedes in the DaimlerChrysler days remains, but by re-tuning the independent suspension and adding electro-hydraulic steering, the XL sedan handles more handsomely and feels smaller at the wheel. Chrysler's leaned the wheels in a little more too (called negative camber) and upgraded the tires on all models to aid the corner carving cause.

Headlining the powertrain story is the arrival - and not a moment to soon - of Chrysler's new 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 as the standard engine. Debuted in the Jeep Grand Cherokee last year, it makes 292 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque here. That's an increase of 42 hp and 10 lb-ft over the old 3.5L, not to mention a four miles per gallon bump in fuel economy.

Beyond its joint program with the EPA that's focused on developing a hydraulic hybrid system for passenger cars, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has revealed plans to bring a more conventional gasoline-electric hybrid version of the new Chrysler 300 to market here in 2013. He followed up comments initially made at the Detroit Auto Show by telling workers at the automaker's plant in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, that a hybrid minivan also will be joining the corporate lineup, although he gave no confirmation as to whether it would be based on a next-gen version of the Chrysler Town & Country or Dodge Grand Caravan. Both minivans are currently produced at the Canadian facility along with the Chrysler 300, but Marchionne previously indicated that one of the two will likely be replaced by some sort of new multipurpose "people mover" when the full redesign does occur. Windsor also will be the future home of their hybrid offshoots, including a rebadged Chrysler 300/300 Hybrid that will be sold in Europe as the Lancia Thema/Thema Hybrid.

The long anticipated release of the all-new Chrysler 300 marks an important milestone in the new Chrysler Group's five-year plan. Chrysler's flagship luxury sedan is entirely new for 2011 and includes some unexpected design details.

A redesigned grille features seven deeply sculpted horizontal blades. The liquid-chrome finish of the blades and the new Chrysler wing badge contrast nicely against the bright chrome grille. Bi-functional projector headlamps accompany LED-illuminated daytime running lamps, which together form a “C” shape.

For improved aerodynamics and visibility, the 300's windshield has been raked back 3 inches, while rolled-framed doors with thinner pillars improve outward visibility by 15 percent. A new dual-pane panoramic sunroof provides passengers with twice the outward visibility of a standard sunroof.

From the rear, the deck lid on the new 300 now incorporates a lip spoiler and jeweled-like LED rear taillamps and signature “light pipes”.

The new 300 incorporates substantial interior upgrades, as well, including the use of soft touch materials throughout the cabin, available heated and ventilated Nappa leather seats, and real wood appliques on the instrument panel, doors, center console and steering wheel.

A new instrument cluster features two large gauge faces with sapphire blue illumination and chrome ring accents. An all-new sapphire blue LED-illuminated provides ambient interior lighting.

The 2011 Chrysler 200 won't be the most fuel-efficient ride in its class, as the EPA has rated the new midsize sedan at 20/31 mpg in city/highway. The figures are available for the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that's available with a six-speed automatic transmission standard on Touring and Limited trim levels, as KickingTires reported. In other words, this means the new Chrysler 200 is less fuel-efficient than Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Hyundai Sonata, the same source added.

The 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine that develops 283 horsepower is by far more efficient, achieving 19/29 mpg in city/highway. This means the future model is more efficient than Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Malibu, but slots below Toyota Camry in the US midsize sedan class.

Chrysler Group LLC has announced that it will begin sales of 2011 Jeep Compass next month. When the Jeep Compass hits the roads, it will have a starting price tag of $19,295, which excludes a $700 destination fee. The price is higher than the $15,365 for the 2010 Jeep Compass.

The company noted that the 2011 model features a lot more standard equipment including air conditioning, power windows and locks, heated power side mirrors, keyless entry, fog lamps, cruise control and tinted glass.
The 2011 Jeep Compass is available in three trims: base, Latitude and Limited, with the base model starting at $19,295. The Compass base comes equipped with a five-speed manual transmission, heated power side mirrors, fog lamps, roof rails, rear-window wiper/washer, air conditioning , 17-inch aluminum wheels and a lot more.
The Jeep Compass Latitude is priced at $21,595. This trim level of Compass comes equipped with continuously variable automatic transmission, heated front seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, fold-flat front seat and a 115-volt auxiliary outlet. The Jeep Compass Limited that is priced at $24,295 comes with a 172-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder, automatic climate control, in-dash vehicle display, auto-dimming rearview mirror and leather upholstery among others.
Chrysler has redesigned the front end of the 2011 Compass to give a more upscale look, like the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Base and Latitude trims come standard with a 158-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which is rated at 23/29 mpg city/highway with a five-speed manual transmission.

The 2011 Ram 1500 pickup trucks were recalled by Chrysler after a risk of rear-axle seizure was discovered.

Chrysler is recalling about 56,600 Ram 1500 pickups from the 2011 model year because the rear axle might seize. Meanwhile, Ford is recalling about 14,700 trucks and crossovers after two fires at an assembly plant, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
In a recent filing, Chrysler told the agency that it began its investigation after receiving three owner complaints about noise coming from, or seizure of, the rear axle. Chrysler said it determined that increasing the amount of lube oil from 71 to 91 ounces “considerably improved lubrication and bearing heat management.”
The company has since begun filling all new rear axles with additional fluid. The recall involves adding 20 more ounces to trucks already sold. Chrysler was aware of 20 complaints about the rear axles as of Dec. 21. The majority of failures occurred within the first 500 miles.

US automakers Ford and Chrysler are recalling tens of thousands of vehicles due to safety problems, the government said Friday.

Chrysler Group was recalling about 143,000 vehicles over the 2008-2011 model years in three separate filings, according to a report on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's website.

The number-three US automaker, managed by Italy's Fiat, recalled more than 22,000 2008-2011 Dodge Ram trucks to address a potential steering problem.

Chrysler also recalled about 65,000 2009 Dodge Journey sport utility vehicles that could fail to deploy air bags, and 56,000 2011 Ram trucks to fix a bearing that could cause them to stall.

Ford Motor, the nation's second-largest automaker, recalled almost 15,000 2011 model years of pickup trucks, Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX SUVs to address an electrical problem that could cause a fire, the government said.

Chrysler Group's Jeep brand will become the subsidiary's primary global make in the first half of next year as Fiat emphasises the Lancia nameplate in Europe, a top executive said.

Chrysler's minivan, the Sebring and 300 models will be rebadged as Lancias across most of Europe at the end of the first quarter or early in the second, said Michael Manley, Chrysler Group's international chief.

Manley said sharing models among the brands is part of a plan outlined by Fiat and Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne in November.

Chrysler aims for Jeep to account for half of Chrysler Group's international sales, up from closer to a third historically, he said.

The goal will be to have two brands - Jeep and one other - from the Chrysler Group in every market, Manley said at an event to introduce the new version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee last week in California.

"The brand is global, it's very well known everywhere around the world," said Manley. "With our partnership with Fiat we can now focus on Jeep as an international brand."

If Alfa Romeo denied rumors about a future SUV then why has Chrysler decided to build two of them under the Alfa Romeo name? Both models will be built in the US with the first model being based on the Giulietta and launching in 2012. The second one is based on the Jeep Cherokee with a debut set for 2014.

The two SUVs
are internally known as CSUV (Project 921, CXover possible model name) and D-SUV led (Project 931, model name DXover possible). Both models will be built on the so-called C/D-matrix platform that will also be used for a few other Alfa Romeo models in the future. With approximately 4.6 meters, the Giulietta version will be about 30 centimeters shorter than the D-SUV.

The smaller version will only be offered with four-cylinder engines, with base version using a 115 HP 1.6-liter engine version and the top model using a 1.8-liter engine with 140 HP. A 200 HP Quadrifoglio Verde will also be offered. The Diesel version will include a 1.6-liter engine with 120 HP and a larger 2.0-liter engine with 140 or 170 HP.

At its launch, the DXover version will be offered with a 2.8-liter V6 with 197 HP and a new 3.0-liter V6 with 225 HP at first. A 273 HP 3.3 liters V6 engine will be available at a later date.

Chrysler Group is putting your new car's owners manual on your smartphone. The maker of Chryslers, Jeeps and Dodges says it's the first big automaker to do it.

Last year, Chrysler Group replaced traditional, bulky owner manuals with DVDs and user guides. That was a space-saving idea, given that owners manuals have grown to 1,000 pages sometimes, but most people don't carry around a DVD player.

Now, in addition to general vehicle information including vehicle operation, maintenance and warranty, this new app offers product-feature video demonstrations, connections with fellow owners via the company's brands on social media sites, and access to customer care and 24-hour road-side assistance, the company says.

The new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, coming to showrooms now, will be the first to get it.

The rocks and desert surrounding Moab, Utah, have seen a lot of things. Dinosaurs hatching, dying, and turning into tar. Mormons fleeing persecution, flourishing, and inspiring a hit HBO show. And Jeeps. Lots and lots and lots of Jeeps. But this is Moab’s first look at the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Ours, too, at least from behind the wheel.

It’s an eagerly anticipated one, with Chrysler hitting financial rock bottom last year and its new-product pipeline drying up like a desert riverbed under the sweltering summer sun. That makes this Grand Cherokee, the first Jeep product to emerge after the Fiat-Chrysler alliance, a hugely important barometer of vitality and competence for an organization that has displayed little of either for the better part of a decade. The latest Ram and Ram Heavy Duty pickups are good indicators of what Chrysler is still capable of—they’re very good. Hooray for Chrysler, then, that the 2011 Grand Cherokee is good, too.

Based on the same architecture as the current-generation Mercedes-Benz M-class, the Grand Cherokee has thoroughly modern running gear. The live axle of the previous generation was tossed in favor of an independent multilink suspension, and civility has taken a commensurate move upward. Even while losing the stick axle, Jeep calls this “the most capable Grand Cherokee ever.” Helping validate that claim is an optional Land Rover–style terrain-selection system, inventively called Selec-Terrain, as well as three different all-wheel-drive systems and an available air suspension.

We spent the better part of a day scrambling up, over, and around nature on Moab’s Hell’s Revenge and Fins and Things trails, which were thick with lifted Jeep CJs, Toyota FJs, and custom-built off-road beasts. The GC acquitted itself very well, a given considering the trails were custom-picked to showcase the SUV’s abilities. Still, we easily conquered super-steep rock faces, craggy stair climbs, and sandy washouts—all with ventilated seats whirring under our butts. The sweaty driver of the 1975 CJ we saw with no doors and a three-legged dog riding shotgun didn’t know what he was missing. We returned to the trailheads suitably impressed.

Chrysler is recalling more than half a million minivans and Jeep Wranglers, the automaker told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

A wiring problem is forcing the automaker to recall about 285,000 2008-9 Dodge Grand Caravans and Chrysler Town & Country minivans. Chrysler told the safety agency on June 1 that “an improperly routed wiring harness” can be rubbed by a sliding door. That would wear through the insulation and possibly cause a fire inside the door. Chrysler said it has 57 reports of vehicles having “thermal damage” but knows of no accidents or injuries.

In addition, about 285,000 2007–10 Jeep Wranglers are being recalled. The problem with the Jeeps, Chrysler says, is that the front inner fender liners may rub against brake lines and cause a leak. That could result in a “partial loss” of the brakes, the automaker told safety agency. Chrysler said it was not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the problem.

Some striking news came a few days ago from car manufacturer, Chrysler, as they explained that they are going to have to recall more than 700,000 vehicles. The decision to recall the cars came as Chrysler executives discovered brake and wiring problems in the recalled Chrysler models.

It is reported that there will be around 500,000 – 600,000 Chrysler vehicles that will have to be recalled in the United States, and there will also be around 100,000 vehicles to be recalled from various other countries.

Luckily, Chrysler seems to have caught this problem before any crashes or injuries were reported.

There are a few models of Chrysler cars that are affected by this recall including the 2006 – 2010 Jeep Wranglers, which are said to have a problem with leaking brake fluid, the 2008 – 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan and the 2008 – 2009 Chrysler Town and Country, both of which are said to have wiring issues.

Chrysler has reported that they will be getting in touch with all the owners of these cars to arrange repairs. If you own one of these cars, however, and are not contacted soon, you may want to contact your local dealer.

Chrysler said Friday it would recall 25,000 Dodge and Jeep vehicles in the U.S. to fix sticking gas pedals made by the same supplier involved in the recall of 2.3 million Toyota vehicles for the same problem.

Chrysler told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that because the 25,263 2007 Dodge Calibers and 71 Jeep Compass models were equipped with brake-override software, it did not consider the problem a safety defect, but would conduct a voluntary recall anyway.

The automaker said the problem stemmed from a manufacturing defect at CTS that caused the bearing housing to be made too large, a problem CTS corrected in March 2006. Chrysler estimated that only 30% of the vehicles covered by the recall would actually have the problem.

In addition to the U.S. vehicles, Chrysler's recall also covers 5,572 cars in Canada, 2,260 in Mexico and 1,536 elsewhere.

Toyota cited sticking pedals from CTS as the problem behind the recall of 2.3 million vehicles this year linked to reports of sudden acceleration. Toyota has said the pedals and unsecured floor mats were the only known reason for thousands of complaints, but NHTSA and two congressional panels are still probing the automaker's response and researching whether its electronics were at fault.

Chrysler Group gave Detroit another reason to celebrate the official start of production today of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee by announcing that it will hire 1,100 more workers by July to add a second shift at the Jefferson North plant in Motown that's building the Jeep flagship.

The Grand Cherokee is Chrysler's key (and only all-new) vehicle launch this year and it showed confidence in the SUV by already announcing the second shift to boost capacity. The Grand Cherokee is due on sale in June.

Chrysler's Sebring convertible, with rear seats that can accommodate two adults and a generous trunk, languished in recent years as its manufacturer went bankrupt and was sold.

But the Sebring is still around, with nicer front styling for 2010 and other minor revisions such as a new instrument cluster and anti-whiplash front-seat head restraints.

In fact, the Sebring convertible and Sebring sedan posted impressive, triple-digit sales gains in the first four months of this year compared with the 2009 period.

The Sebring was supposed to be phased out this year. But Chrysler — now owned by the federal government and Italian carmaker Fiat — is reportedly sprucing up the car for 2011.

Starting manufacturer's suggested retail price, including destination charge, is $28,590 for a 2010 Sebring soft-top model with 173horsepower, four-cylinder engine and automatic transmission.

The starting retail price for a 2010 Sebring convertible with power retractable hard top is $35,445. This includes 235-horsepower V-6 and automatic transmission.

Note that it is unusual for a four-seat convertible to offer a choice of roofs.

The competing, four-seat, 2010 Volkswagen Eos, which comes standard with power retractable hard top, has a starting retail price of $33,140 with 200-horsepower, turbocharged four cylinder and manual transmission.

A 2010 Eos with automatic has a starting retail price of $34,240.

Chrysler U.S. April sales increase 25%

CTS Pedals on Chrysler Cars Investigated for Sticking

Chrysler Group LLC accelerator pedals made by the same company that supplied Toyota Motor Corp. are under investigation by U.S. automotive-safety regulators for potential cases of sticking in Dodge Caliber models.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a Web site posting today it is looking into the pedals made by CTS Corp. for Chrysler’s 2007 model year Dodge Caliber, which includes about 161,000 vehicles. The agency said it received five complaints by consumers saying the pedals stuck while they were driving their vehicles.

“The company’s initial examination of customer complaints finds they are limited to a small group of vehicles built during a five week window in March and April of 2006,” Chrysler spokesman Nick Cappa said in an e-mailed statement. “It appears to be a supplier manufacturing concern, which is mechanical in nature and not a design or electronic issue.”

About 10,000 vehicles out of the 2007 model year were made with the batch of pedals containing the mechanical defect, Cappa said in an interview. The vehicles have brake-override technology, which is intended to stop a car if both the accelerator and brake are applied.

Classic Car Auction To Aid Chrysler Museum

Two years ago the Walter P. Chrysler Museum Foundation, with just 70 cars and six full-time employees at the time, switched to non-profit status and asked Chrysler dealers for $5,000 donations to assist with expenses. We aren't sure what's transpired in the interim, but whatever it was doesn't appear to have done the trick. It is now being reported that the museum will auction 20 of its vehicles in order to help its own bottom line, and they'll go on the block during the Classic Car Auction of Michigan, overseen by RM Auctions.

Chrysler Group LLC said North Carolina has dropped a statute giving closed-down car dealers the right to hold their inventory rather than sell their vehicles to dealerships that remain open.

The change comes as three Florida dealers are preparing to plead their cases in separate arbitration hearings Tuesday. The dealers want the chance to rejoin the auto maker's network.

Chrysler closed 789 dealerships last year as part of its bankruptcy and agreement to merge its assets with Fiat SpA. The move—backed by the Obama administration—set off a state and federal backlash after dealers expressed outrage to their representatives and legislators.

North Carolina, along with Illinois, Maine and Oregon, enacted statutes in an attempt to override the bankruptcy laws giving the remaining dealers the opportunity to buy vehicles and brands from the closed dealers. Federal legislators also mandated Chrysler allow its closed dealers a chance to rejoin the network through arbitration.

Chrysler sued North Carolina, Maine, Illinois and Oregon arguing that the statutes interfered with the bankruptcy court sale process and federal law.

The state law said the closed dealers could release their inventory only if Chrysler paid the dealer the value of their former dealerships or filed an action showing the dealers were unfit.

"Chrysler Group is pleased to reach an amicable resolution to our issues," the company said Monday. "Such state dealer laws grant rejected dealers specific statutory rights previously afforded only to existing dealers, and are preempted in accordance with the bankruptcy court's prior rulings."

Chrysler plans to bring a four-door retractable-top car to market. The new convertible sedan will based on the next-generation Chrysler Group LX platform and will arrive no earlier than the 2010 model year.

Helios concept (ASC design), based on a 300C four-door sedan, was unveiled at the Detroit show last year. The Helios is a rag top with a lattice structure to provide expected levels of body rigidity. But Chrysler has rejected the ASC design and chosen another designers to build its 300 retractable sedan. A complex folding steel roof covering four doors in a large sedan seems difficult, but if Chrysler can carry this off, a Chrysler 300 Convertible will add more prestige to keep it at the forefront of leading-edge design.

Chrysler to fix airbags in some 355,500 minivans

Chrysler Group LLC on Wednesday asked the owners of more than 355,000 of its popular minivans to take them to dealers in a few months to replace crash sensors that help to control the air bags.

The sensors can crack and fail in 2005 and 2006 Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan models, Chrysler said in a statement. It is asking owners to wait until June to contact dealers because it needs time to distribute repair parts.

The automaker is calling the move a "safety improvement campaign" and says it is not a recall. But National Highway Traffic Safety Administration spokeswoman Oliva Alair says the agency considers it a recall and is monitoring repairs to make sure they are carried out.

Chrysler said that in some weather conditions, the front crash sensors can crack, causing water to enter. The company says the sensors help the air-bag control computer decide the speed and manner to deploy the safety devices. Sensors to be replaced are not the main airbag control sensor, the company said.

Chrysler Group LLC dealers left the first large-scale meeting with the automaker's new management team Sunday encouraged by the executives' commitment to reviving the company, but braced for a product drought.

The meeting, held at the National Automobile Dealers Association annual convention, gave dealers a chance to voice concerns about the company, which emerged from bankruptcy protection last summer, and question executives about plans, products, marketing and incentive spending.

The mood during the two-hour closed-door meeting was mostly upbeat, a marked contrast to a year ago in New Orleans, when Chrysler executives urged dealers to order more vehicles when inventories already were high. Behind that rebadged Lancia Delta is a large video screen playing a Chrysler promotional video. Nothing special, right? Wrong. The video in question is apparently showing sneak peeks of future Chrysler models. Chrysler Shows Off 200C Electric Sedan Concept

Chrysler is offering a glimpse of what an electric-powered sedan would look like with a new concept car.

The automaker unveiled the Chrysler 200C EV Concept on Sunday at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The four-door, rear-wheel drive sedan also could be made as a hybrid or with a six-cylinder engine.

Chrysler LLC Vice Chairman Jim Press says, "It represents an inspired and soulful look at what a Chrysler sedan should be."

The car's interior is free of switches or levers, with functions managed via a panoramic touch screen and other interactive components.

Chrysler said Sunday that it's also adding the Jeep Patriot small SUV to its stable of proposed electric vehicles.

Chrysler Sales in 2009 Dropped Below One Million for First Time Since 1962

December was not a month to remember for auto manufacturer Chrysler, and neither was the year it wrapped up. The bad news for Chrysler came in many forms: auto sales declined 4% last month compared to the same time in 2008; sales overall for 2009 were down 36%; total car and truck sales numbered 931,402, the first time they fell below one million since 1962; and the company fell to fifth place for the first time, after being passed by Honda, whose sales rose 24% in December.

While sales were also down for General Motors (30%) in 2009, Ford Motor Company actually showed signs of promise. Its sales last month in the U.S. were up 33% over December 2008, giving Ford its best month since May 2008.

Chrysler’s big rear-drive sedan will be re-invented sometime during the 2010 calendar year, by the fine engineering people in Auburn Hills, Michigan, and some of its design and engineering aspects might even be leveraged by the parent company, Fiat, for its big Lancia and Alfa Romeo products.

In the meantime, there are a few new items of note for model-year 2010…

300 Touring and 300 Limited are equipped with the 250-hp 3.5-litre V6, while 300C gets its motivation from the 360-hp 5.7-litre HEMI V8, and 300C SRT goes one better, with the 425-hp 6.1-litre HEMI V8.

Standard transmission is a 4-speed automatic. But optional on V6 models and standard on AWD and V8 models is the 5-speed automatic with Auto-Stick. Models equipped with this 5-speed debuted Chrysler’s fuel shut off technology (iDFSO), as a running change in model-year 2009.

Another recent Chrysler advance that debuted on the 300, is adaptive speed control, which uses radar to maintain a specific distance between the vehicle and the one in front of it.

This year 300 also gets a Fuel Saver Indicator (FSI), and Passive Entry. The latter is an enhancement to the remote keyless entry system, which allows you to lock and unlock the doors without having to press the transmitter lock or unlock the buttons.

Available on all Chrysler models for 2010 is the new uconnect Hands-Free Communication System, which allows you to place and receive calls over the stereo system (with your Bluetooth phone), and connect your i-Pod to the stereo via a factory-installed cable.

Chrysler will display electric car at Detroit auto show

Chrysler Group LLC will show off new products at the Detroit auto show, after all, a source familiar with Chrysler's planning told The Detroit News.

The Auburn Hills automaker will show a battery-powered version of the Fiat 500 subcompact, a product of the company's partnership with Italian automaker Fiat SpA, the source said Tuesday. It also will present a Chrysler model based on Fiat's Lancia Delta, the source said.

Details of the company's plans are not public, and Chrysler recently said it would not show anything new at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, saying its plans were to show new vehicles that were actually ready for consumers to buy.

It isn't known whether Chrysler has decided to put the car into production, the source said. Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne, who holds the same title at Fiat, said last month the company plans to produce about 56,000 electric vehicles annually by 2014, and Chrysler may base its initial model on the Fiat Doblo van.

The cars to be shown in Detroit will signal how Fiat's designs will be incorporated into the lineup of Chrysler's products to help the company attempt to end losses after it emerged from bankruptcy.

Even with the news Chrysler will show two new vehicles, the company isn't on the press conference list.

The show opens to the media Jan. 11-12 and the public Jan. 14. Gualberto Ranieri, a Chrysler spokesman, declined to comment.

However, now that we have seen what the car looks like, it does cast an opinion that this is going to be one hell of a show stopper. The spy shots make it clear that Chrysler has gone for a rounded exterior instead of its usual pimp look.

From the front it has a definitive executive image, displaying an exceptionally smooth front side that looks less ferocious and more like a diplomat. Good combination of leather and wood paneling in the interior too adds up to the same result. Even though no official statement about the performance is out, fuel economy is said to be better by 22 percent. Options in the engine are a 2.7-litre, a 3.5-litre, a 5.7-litre and a 6.1-litre HEMI V8.

Also, for the diesel lover, there is a 3.0 litre turbo diesel engine. Since the news of the Fiat-Chrysler tie-up, there has been a rumor that in the very near future, Maseratis and Lancias would be on the road running on the RWD 300 platform. Also expected is the Lancia, featuring a new V6 engine that would be debuting in the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. However, for the moment the focus is on the 2010 Chrysler. These pictures make it clear that the diplomat in Chrysler is finally out to ride the roads. What remains to be seen in this regard is will it rule the world or will it join the sidelines.

Chrysler Dreams of Electric Fiats

Chrysler will show some signs of life when it rolls into the Detroit auto show with — get this — an electric version of the Fiat 500.

Chrysler is bringing the electric 500 and a Lancia Delta sporting a Chrysler grille to the show, says Automotive News, citing “two sources familiar with the plans.” They’re just showpieces, and the sources tell Automotive News Chrysler has no plans to produce either one, but at least we’re seeing something outta Chrysler– even if it isn’t holding a press conference at the show.

We already knew Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne planned to bring the Fiat 500 to America, and if he includes the hot Abarth 500 in the deal we’ll ask to have him canonized. Chrysler reportedly disbanded its ENVI electric car team, but Marchionne’s plan included having many of those engineers work on other EVs.

The 500 — which, by the way, we love — is perfect for electric power. It’s small, it’s reasonably light and it’s perfectly suited to urban driving, so big range won’t be an issue. Finding room for the battery could be tricky, but that’s what engineers are for.

Chrysler to show electric minicar at 2010 Detroit auto show

So Chrysler will display a battery-powered version of the Fiat 500 minicar at the show, but no decision has been made whether the car will be offered for sale in the U.S., according to people familiar with the plans.

The company will also show a version of the Lancia Delta mid-size hatchback with a Chrysler grille, as well as one or two models from Fiat’s luxury nameplates, Ferrari and Maserati.

Micro-Vett SpA, an Italian company, has produced a few Fiat 500s powered by a lithium polymer Kokam battery with 22 kilowatt-hours of capacity and a maximum speed of 60 miles per hour. The vehicle, which was unveiled at the London Motor Show in July 2008, can be driven 70 miles between recharging, which take between six and eight hours.

Last month, when Chrysler executives laid out their five-year plan there was no plan for a mass-market gas-electric hybrid or plug-in hybrid car before 2015. A hybrid powertrain offered in 2008 on a handful of Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen SUVs will be available in 2010 on the Dodge Ram light-duty pickup truck.

In 2011, Chrysler will launch a test fleet of 200 plug-in minivans and pickups developed through a federal grant.

Fiat’s green and gas-saving technologies revolve less around electric vehicles than its small cars and its Multiair electric valve technology, which it will fit to future Chryslers, said John Voelker editor-in-chief of GreenCarReports.com.

Chrysler will build the 500 at its plant in Toluca, Mexico, beginning late 2010. Initial plans are to produce 100,000 of the car a year -- half for sale in North America and half for sale in Brazil and Argentina. In addition, Chrysler is investing $179 million in its Dundee, Mich., engine plant to produce Fiat’s 1.4-liter engines with Multiair technology.

Multiair is a sophisticated technology that delivers up to 10% more power while cutting fuel consumption and carbon emissions by as much as 10% compared to similar engines.

2010 Chrysler PT Cruiser Preview

Not too long ago it looked like model-year 2009 would be the last for the Chrysler PT Cruiser.

It is the only Chrysler vehicle still based on the Neon platform, and the only one still using the Neon's old 2.4-litre engine.

Chrysler has now said that 2010 models will definitely be built, though maybe not a whole year's worth. And that there will only be one model — PT Cruiser Classic.

The sold powerplant for Cruiser Classic will be that 2.4-litre I4 hooked up to a 4-speed automatic.

The model is equipped, with standard four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, Electronic Vehicle Information Center, 16-inch aluminum wheels, tire pressure monitoring, cruise, air conditioning, and traction control.

There is also a bit of cosmetic razzle-dazzle to distinguish it as the last of the breed: Inside and outside are more chrome pieces.

But maybe 2010 won't even be its last year. Fiat boss, Sergio Marchionne, has gone on record that he likes the PT Cruiser. Considering it is already sold in Europe, maybe Fiat will find some future niche for the PT brand, either here in North American or elsewhere.

PT was one of the original "tall wagons," and its style is weathering well. Might it even be timeless?

Time has been harsher to other aspects of PT. The dash is definitely more dated, with lots of hard plastic and long-ago conceived switchgear. But the rear seats, and the front passenger seat fold forward, and there's that "parcel shelf" which PT pioneered.

With that older engine and a 4-speed automatic, the PT has never been a fuel economy leader. It handles quite well, even though it does exhibit some body roll.

If you've ever hankered for one of these retro-styled ride, model year 2010 might be your last chance to buy one new off the lot.

Chrysler to build new engine for Fiat 500

Chrysler Group LLC has announced it will invest US$179 million to build a new, fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine in Michigan, using Fiat technology, that will be used in the North American-built Fiat 500 in 2011.

The 1.4-litre Fully Integrated Robotized Engine (FIRE) will be built at the company’s Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance (GEMA) plant in Michigan, creating up to 573 new jobs industry-wide, with up to 155 of them in the Chrysler Group.

FIRE is a collaboration between Chrysler Group and Fiat powertrain groups, and will include Fiat’s advanced technologies to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy.

Engine production will begin in the fourth quarter of 2010. The first application will be the Fiat 500, which will go into production in 2011.

Chrysler has two plants at the GEMA complex and will produce the FIRE at the South Plant. The North Plant, opened in October 2005, produces the World Gas Engine, a family of naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engines.

Affordable lots of room and a smooth ride are just a few things to like about the 2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser.

When the Chrysler PT Cruiser was introduced eight years ago, its retro look made it a heartthrob of sorts and inspired the sort of manic adoration not seen since Cabbage Patch Kids sparked soccer mom brawls in toy store aisles. In other words, it had all the earmarks of a fad — hot today, dead tomorrow. But its sales figures have shown surprising resiliency. Although the PT Cruiser falls well short of being the must-have superstar it was years ago, it continues to be one of the top sellers in the Chrysler stable.

In recent years, Chrysler has streamlined production of the compact hauler, and that trend continues for 2009. The GT model got its pink slip last year; this year, it’s the convertible body style that gets the axe. Also, a turbocharged inline-4 is no longer offered as an option on Touring models; it’s currently available only on top-of-the-line Limited models. The reduced availability of the turbo engine is unfortunate, since the Cruiser’s naturally aspirated engine offers rather lethargic performance.

The Chrysler Crossfire was officially unveiled on the 15th November 2003 and we were invited to drive both the automatic and manual variants at a Chrysler press day.

We brought our initial findings to you in our first Chrysler Crossfire review and nearly a year on we bring you a more in-depth road test and review.

The Crossfire is built in Germany in collaboration with Karmann who also produced the Ghia Coupe & Cabriolet the most beautiful bodies ever to adorn a VW chassis. The Crossfire combines a stunning American design with proven German engineering (39 percent of the new cars components are adapted from existing DaimlerChrysler technology) and the result is a larger than life coupe set to challenge the Audi TT, BMW Z4, Mazda RX-8, Nissan 350Z and Porsche Boxster.

The Crossfire is built around the outgoing Mercedes Benz SLK platform, and Chrysler have made a good job of shoehorning a Sports Coupe into a convertible platform, although it does compromise the interior layout. The advantage to Chrysler was that they could bring the car from concept stage to production car in less than two years, which is no mean feat.

We tested the Crossfire 3.2 V6 Coupe to find out if Chrysler's rear wheel drive, high performance Coupe can out perform Germany's finest.

Chrysler PT Cruiser Review

Cast your mind back to the original Fiat Multipla, with its unusual shape. People either loved it or hated it - the PT Cruiser evokes similar emotions.

The Cabrio version is no different and during the test week, it gained a lot of attention. However, not all interest was positive. Someone even went as far as saying that it looked like an upturned boat, so you can guess which side of the fence they were on.

But there’s no denying that it’s a head-turner, especially with the roof down. It sits some 62mm lower than the hatchback but has the same wheelbase and front track measurements and carries much of the styling from the hatch, which was updated last year and now features a smoother front and rear end and scalloped headlights.

The Cabrio is only available as a three-door, which is a shame because two extra doors would add greatly to the convenience factor. However, it isn’t feasible - the lowered height and the arc of the folding roof doesn’t allow for it. The compromise is extra-long front doors, which allow passengers to get in and out of the two rear seats. With the roof down, this isn’t too difficult but the seat belts are anchored to the inside of the car, almost adjacent to the rear passengers and again on the side of the front squab.

The all new Chrysler Grand Voyager was launched in March 2008 - replacing the popular outgoing model which had been with us since 2001. It also marks the demise of the more popular smaller Voyager.

The new Chrysler Grand Voyager is available with a choice of petrol or diesel engine, 6-speed automatic transmission and three equipment levels: LX, Touring and Limited. Prices start at £26,000 for the 2.8 CRD LX 6-speed automatic and rise to £33,000 for either the 2.8 CRD Limited 6-speed automatic or 3.8 V6 petrol Limited 6-speed automatic.

We drove the top of the range diesel model - the Chrysler Grand Voyager Limited fitted with a 2.8 CRD diesel engine mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox.

The new Chrysler Grand Voyager offers a choice of two engines: a petrol 3.8-litre V6 engine and the far more popular and sensible 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine that is commonly seen in the Jeep range.

Our test car was fitted with the 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine which outputs 161 bhp at 3800 rpm and produces 265 lb/ft of torque between 1600 rpm and 3000 rpm. Which propels the Grand Voyager from 0-62 mph in 12.8 seconds and onto a top speed of 115 mph.

The 2.8 CRD engine does seem to run out of puff up hill, which is especially apparent on the motorway. Of course the automatic gearbox changes down but it can all feel a little too lethargic to be enjoyable.

Chrysler Group LLC dealers have asked the company to pull new television ads and restore regional marketing budgets after U.S. sales declined 25 percent in November, people familiar with the matter said.

Members of Chrysler’s national dealer council, an advisory body to the automaker, called for the ads to be stopped in a phone call with the Auburn Hills, Michigan-based company’s sales leadership this week, said two people with knowledge of the request who asked not to be identified because the conversation was private.

Dealers, frustrated that narrower incentives and plunging sales are hurting their profits, are pushing back against Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne’s strategy. His five-year business plan, presented last month, aims to rebuild the company’s brands and reduce incentive spending. The transition could be “painful,” he said.

“It is a little difficult for us to understand because it is far different from what we were used to seeing,” said Larry Reid, owner of White Bear Dodge in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. Reid was not on the call with management. “The message to us is that it is branding, branding, branding, and maybe that will work.”

The advertisements, which began in September, focus on lifestyles, and dealers complained that some only briefly show vehicles. One that began running last month shows ticking clocks while a voice describes a Jeep owner’s desire to not be constrained by the daily grind. In the final moments, it shows a Wrangler along with the tagline “I live. I ride. I am. Jeep.”

November Auto Sales: Chrysler

Chrysler Group said Tuesday its U.S. sales fell 25 percent last month from a year earlier on steep declines across major brands.

BY THE NUMBERS: Total sales in the month fell to 63,560 vehicles from 85,260 a year earlier. So far this year, sales are down 38 percent from the same period a year ago.

HOT MODELS: Chrysler Sebring Sedan sales jumped 84 percent to 2,674 units compared with November 2008. Crossover model Dodge Journey sales nearly doubled to 5,434 units. Still, overall sales among Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep brands were much lower than a year ago.

Chrysler Unleashes Incentives on 2010 Models

Chrysler Group LLC will offer 0% financing or as much as $4,000 cash back on its 2010 vehicles in an effort to remain competitive and lure customers into showrooms.

Consumers can choose between 0% financing for 60 months or a cash rebate on all of the auto maker's vehicles starting Friday and ending Jan. 4. There are also free equipment upgrade options—such as the installation of a DVD player or all-wheel drive—on some models.

The incentives highlight the reality new Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne finds himself in as he attempts to revive the third-largest U.S.-based auto maker. Mr. Marchionne, who is also CEO of Fiat SpA, told reporters just over two weeks ago that he wanted to reduce Chrysler's reliance on discounts.

However, auto makers aren't ready to abandon discounts as they still face a slow economic recovery. Chrysler is facing the hardest challenge to generate sales as its filing for bankruptcy protection and its subsequent change in ownership to Fiat may have kept consumers away from showrooms.

Chrysler didn't release its five-year survival plan until November, although the company exited bankruptcy protection in June. This year's sales of its vehicles have fallen 39% through Oct. 31.

The latest offer, called the "Year-end Wrap-up," includes $3,000 cash back or 0% on Chrysler brand vehicles and a no-cost service program for three years or 36,000 miles. Chrysler Town & Country minivan buyers will also receive a free installed DVD player.

The Jeep brand offer $4,500 cash back or 0% and the same free service program as Chrysler.

Dodge cars offers $2,500 cash back or 0% and a free all-wheel drive upgrade on a Dodge Charger.

Chrysler launches incentives on 2010 models

Chrysler Group LLC on Friday launched a year-end sale for nearly all of its 2010 model year vehicles with zero percent financing or up to $4,000 cash to draw customers during the typically slower winter months.

Chrysler, which emerged from a U.S. government-funded bankruptcy in June under the management control of Italy's Fiat SpA (FIA.MI), said the program runs to January 4. It covers nearly all vehicles except the Dodge Challenger muscle car.

Chrysler has fared worse than the U.S. auto industry overall this year as the sector has slumped to the worst sales levels since the early 1980s. Through October, Chrysler sales were off 39 percent, while the industry was down 25.4 percent.

Earlier in November, Chrysler announced a five-year plan that would have the automaker break even on an operating basis in 2010 and on a net basis by 2011 based in part on restoring market share lost in its slide toward bankruptcy.

Chrysler has relied on more aggressive incentives than rivals during the downturn. Edmunds.com has said the true cost of Chrysler incentives in October were about $3,219 per vehicle sold, compared with a $2,468 industry average.

The automaker has about 183,000 vehicles in inventory, with roughly 88 percent as 2010 models and nearly all of the rest 2009 model year vehicles.

For the year-end program, Chrysler is offering $3,000 cash or zero percent financing on 2010 Chrysler brand vehicles. It is offering $4,000 cash or zero percent financing on Jeeps and $2,500 cash or zero percent financing on most Dodge cars.

Chrysler is also offering 1.9 percent financing for 60 months on its Dodge Viper sports car.

Chrysler offers new deals for buyers

Buyers of any Chrysler, Jeep or Dodge car vehicle can get interest-free loans of up to 60 months, or cash rebates of up to $3,000 for Chrysler, up to $4,000 for Jeep and up to $2,500 for Dodge cars.

Buyers of leftover 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup trucks can get no-interest loans of up to 72 months, or up to $5,500 cash back. Buyers of the 2010 Dodge Ram 1500, can borrow at 0% for up to 48 months or at 2.9% for 60 months, or choose cash rebates of up to $2,500.

There are other choices in lieu of the cash-back or interest-free loans. For example, buyers of a Chrysler Town & Country van can have a DVD system for no extra cost. Dodge is offering all-wheel drive on the 2010 Charger for no charge.

Watch out, Ford. Chrysler has its sights on a promising area of new business that you thought you had carved out for yourself -- carlike fuel-efficient cargo vans.

Chrysler plans to import a version of the Fiat Doblo compact van in the U.S., Automotive News reports. The van has the same look and configuration as Ford's just-introduced Transit Connect, built in Turkey and a success across Europe. The Doblo would be sold as a Ram, the truck brand being separated from Dodge. And it won't be alone:

The Doblo will join a large Fiat-based van to be sold in the U.S. by the new Ram truck brand, along with a restyled chassis cab model and light- and heavy-duty Ram vehicles. Fiat has a 20% stake in Chrysler, which is enough to be considered the controlling shareholder.

The latest version of the Doblo starts sale in Europe starting in mid-January with U.S. sales in 2012. No name for the U.S. market yet. The new Doblo offers the most interior room and lowest carbon emissions of any van in its segment, Fiat boasts.

The Obama administration's preference for robust electric car production will not influence its oversight of taxpayer equity in General Motors GM.UL and Chrysler, an administration official said.

Ron Bloom, the head of the government task force that facilitated the restructuring of GM and Chrysler this year, said in an interview with Reuters that there is a bright line separating the two issues.

"We obviously would be very happy if Chrysler and GM were making lots and lots of high mileage cars. It's not a prerequisite. It's not an obligation," Bloom said on Tuesday.

The government, which has deferred to directors and management of both companies, wants viable automakers that can compete globally and repay their loans in a timely way.

The Obama administration has extended $30 billion and bankruptcy financing and working capital to GM, and $8.5 billion to Chrysler. Those taxpayer investments translate into a 60 percent stake in GM and a nearly 10 percent share of Chrysler.

Plans at both companies call for more fuel efficient vehicles regardless of engine technology and a variety of smaller cars.

GM has made a big side bet on the Volt electric hybrid due out next year. But Fiat (FIA.MI)-led Chrysler this month set aside its plans to develop a similar mass-market vehicle, concluding the effort did not fit with its accelerated business plan.

The decision raised eyebrows in Washington, and in the environmental and energy communities, since Chrysler secured help from the government partly on its blueprint for battery powered vehicles.

"We're completely separating policy from ownership," Bloom said in response to the Chrysler decision. "We trust that the board has carefully thought through the various options of the company and where it was and made judgments on the electric program based on that."

Chrysler May Drop 145 Dealers on Lack of Inventory Financing

Chrysler Group LLC may have to terminate as many as 145 more U.S. dealers unless the retailers can find lenders to finance their new-vehicle inventory.

GMAC Inc., which replaced Chrysler Financial as the preferred lender for the Auburn Hills, Michigan-based automaker’s dealers, has been negotiating with Chrysler retailers, said Sue Mallino, a GMAC spokeswoman.

If dealers can’t get the financing from GMAC, they may lose their franchise agreement unless they can find another lender, said Kathy Graham, a Chrysler spokeswoman.

The outcome may mean fewer dealerships for Chrysler, which has about 2,400 U.S. outlets after terminating 789 as part of a government-aided bankruptcy reorganization. Chrysler exited court protection after six weeks on June 10 under the control of Fiat SpA. GMAC took over preferred financing duties for Chrysler dealers as part of the reorganization.

Of about 1,500 dealers that applied to Detroit-based GMAC to finance their vehicle inventory, about 90 percent will qualify, Mallino said. She said 85 dealers have been refused such financing and 50 to 60 others are still in negotiations.

Fiat kills Chrysler electric car

The Chrysler/Dodge ENVI The Chrysler ENVI electric car program, which was put on hold shortly after Fiat offered to buy Chrysler Corporation from Cerberus Capital Management, has officially been killed by Fiat executives.

The original plan, which involved $70 million dollars of government funding, called for the electric vehicles to be sold starting in 2010, a decision which some critics claimed was impossible. These same critics are now claiming that the entire plan was a ruse to garner more government bailout money for green initiatives.

The decision-makers at Fiat have been downplaying the importance of electric vehicles, or EVs, for months, saying that, "Until the (battery) storage gets resolved, I think electric vehicles are going to struggle," one Fiat executive said in a press release.

No announcements have been made about the funding received from the United States government.

Much has been made of Chrysler's apparent lack of new products for the 2010 model year. Suffice it to say, while there are big things in store for Chrysler, they will take at least another year to get into production. For instance, while removing the unsightly strakes from the hood of the unloved Sebring sedan and convertible is a nice gesture, it's not nearly far enough to make the car suddenly competitive with its chief rivals in the ultra competitive mid-size sedan arena.

Not entirely surprisingly then, Chrysler is trying its best to add a few reasons to purchase its current models before the major changes happen in the next few years. Each of Chrysler's current nameplates – 300, Town and Country, Sebring and PT Cruiser – get Special Editions that will hit the market in the first quarter of 2010.

First, the 300 is slated to get a complete redesign later on in 2010, probably as a 2011 model vehicle. Regardless, the current 300 will get a Sport Edition that's targeted at the youth market before the reboot button is officially pressed. The Town and Country gets a Fashion Edition and the Sebring gets an Ocean Edition (we have no idea what that means).

Lastly, the long-in-the-tooth PT Cruiser gets a Final Edition (finally final? Promise?) and the nameplate is not scheduled to live on past the 2010 model year. So, if you want one... better hit your local dealer post haste. As a parting note, Chrysler never actually mentioned it, but take a good look at the new Chrysler 300 brochure at the top right of the image above – that doesn't look like the current 300 grille, does it? Hint, hint.

Chrysler May Put On a New Badge

Low-resolution, grainy and barely recognizable--sounds like a spy photo of a top-secret supercar in testing. But this time, it's a new Chrysler logo, dug out of the depths of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

The logo, which seems oddly compressed in the vertical axis, is a sort of retro-modern combination of the winged Chrysler logos of the 1990s with a modern typeface and the Chrysler name. It may be yet another visible aspect of the Fiat restructuring and rebranding of Chrysler, though the symbol also bears at least a passing resemblance to Aston Martin's famous winged icon.

Chrysler is no stranger to the whole musical logos game, however, of late a procedure that's tended to coincide with purchase or sale by a parent company, i.e. Daimler. The last such change saw the withdrawal and then reinstatement of the Pentastar logo, which once again appears to have gone the way of the dodo, or the Pontiac, as it were.

An interesting note: the date on the file is from July 2, 2009. That means this new logo has been in the works behind the scenes since the earliest stages of the official merger of the two companies, which was finalized in early June.

Chrysler to Put Television in Its Vehicles

Listen up, TV junkies: You may soon be able to watch some of your favorite shows in the car.

Automaker Chrysler Group will offer live television in its vehicles by the end of the year, according to the Detroit Free Press. The service, called FLO TV Auto Entertainment, costs $629 plus installation costs and offers up to 20 channels, including CBS, CNBC, Comedy Central, Fox News, MSNBC, and MTV.

The system includes a 7-inch DVD screen and a small antenna about the size of a computer mouse, which is mounted on the vehicle's roof. Chrysler will offer the system through its Mopar aftermarket unit in more than 100 metropolitan areas.

Chrysler to cut prices on 2010 pickups

The redesigned 2010 Ram 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty pickups will offer more content at a lower price, Chrysler Group LLC announced today.

The big rig pickups will start at $28,165 for a regular cab models, $31,415 for Crew Cab models and $36,865 for Mega Cab models.

For this model year, Ram will discontinue the Quad cab heavy duty trucks, replacing that with the larger Crew Cab model. All prices include $950 for shipping.

The new Ram adopts the looks introduced in the Dodge Ram 1500 pickup last year, though additional design features were added to the bigger trucks.

The pickups will come with either a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 or the 6.7-liter Cummins diesel inline six-cylinder engine.

While the powertrains carry over from the previous generation, the exterior and interior have been reworked to provide a quieter and smoother ride.

Interior features, which are similar to the Ram 1500, include: a steering column mounted gear shifter to create more room in the center console, optional navigation system and two-tone leather interior. Other features include heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and 10-speaker surround sound stereo.

"We believe we do well against our competition because we are aggressively priced and offer a great product," said Mark Heber, director of Dodge Ram marketing, this week during the media launch of the truck.

The Ram heavy duty will also come in the popular high-end Laramie edition, starting at $42,240 as well as an off-road Power Wagon, starting at $45,780.

Chrysler 200C Concept Car

We were beginning to worry that the 300C was all Ralph Gilles had in him. But if the Chrysler 200C Concept is what Chrysler's styling star can bring to the hitherto dull banquet of Chrysler design, then he should have been placed in charge long ago. It is absolutely gorgeous - check out those wheels - and to our eyes, at least, this is what the straked nonsense known as the Sebring should have been (or at least, what it could have looked like).

A range-extended four-passenger sedan, the car is about the size of a BMW 5-Series. A rear-wheel-driver powered by a plug-in hybrid drivetrain that includes a "small gasoline engine" - Chrysler didn't say how small - aided by a lithium-ion batteries and an electric generator putting out 55kW (74 horsepower) of continuous power. The system's combined forces are good for 200 kW (268 hp) of peak power. The car can go 40 miles on electric power alone (a number that sounds rather familiar), and has an estimated range of up to 400 miles. The 200C is not a slowpoke, either, with a predicted 7-second blast to sixty, and a top speed north of 120.

Inside, the 200C Concept is crammed with enough tech to guide a starfleet. The interactive dashboard is infinitely changeable, internet enabled (via Chrysler's uConnect), and tied into security cameras and street cameras when you want to see how long the line is out front of the Delta Terminal at Detroit Metro. Even better, you can control everything from the integrated tablet PC in the glovebox or from an iPhone-like controller - even roll down the windows and check on the status of the car. And the technology leaf for the passenger also gets a huge shoutout.

Chrysler's bankruptcy filing will undoubtedly affect every aspect of the automaker's short- and long-term endeavors, and not surprisingly, product isn't immune. While testifying in court, Chrysler's manufacturing chief, Frank Ewasyshyn, said the current plant shutdowns and the resulting effect on suppliers will delay Chrysler's 2010 product suite, primarily comprised of minor updates to existing models. While that's not a huge loss, any delay is bound to affect sales, particularly when Chrysler is struggling to maintain a positive public perception. Even worse, Ewasyshyn said that the plant and supplier issues could mean Chrysler's 2011 models could also suffer the same fate. Although he didn't outline exactly what models would be affected, it doesn't bode well for the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee or the redesigned Chrysler 300C.

2010 Chrysler 300 and 300C

A few details and a look at the next-generation Chrysler 300 full-size sedan—as well as the 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee—have seeped out via Chrysler’s viability plan recently submitted to the U.S. government.

Slick Styling

As did Audi when redesigning the TT, Chrysler faced the difficult challenge of reinventing an icon when it went to the drawing board for the next 300. The new 300 possesses a shape similar to that of its predecessor, but looks more elegant. Up front, Chrysler moves to a new corporate grille, first previewed on the Imperial concept and most recently, the 200C EV concept shown at the 2009 Detroit auto show. The thin horizontal chrome bars are sleeker than the eggcrate worn by the current car, and they give the new 300 less of a boxy, road-barge look. Headlight clusters are squared and smoothed, while the front bumper is much more integrated, tightening up the chin.

The 300 will again feature fender flares, but the lower part of the arch is much less prominent. The upper body crease creates a gently arching shoulder in place of the straight and sharp line of the current model, and the new 300 also loses the side molding, giving the upper crease more definition. Expect visibility to be improved though slimmer A-pillars, more glass, and a much smaller C-pillar created through the use of a small A-frame window at the rear.

Although there is no view of the rear, expect to see a significant change from the current car. We anticipate the rear will mimic the clean front styling of the car, better integrating the exhaust tips in the lower valance. LED taillights are nearly a certainty.

Improved Interior

With the latest Dodge Ram demonstrating Chrysler’s renewed interest in interior quality, we expect the new 300 to use similarly improved materials. Sticking with the clean theme of the exterior, the new cabin appears simple and refined. The instrument panel houses two large circular gauges—similar to those in the Ram—while a large display operating Chrysler’s UConnect infotainment system tops the center console. The climate controls reside below the screen.

Powertrains and Other Features

Hemi fans can relax, as the V-8 featuring cylinder deactivation will carry over from the existing model, and it should boast increases in both power and fuel economy. Chrysler says that the new 300 will also be available with an all-new “fuel-efficient” six-cylinder engine—likely the Phoenix line the company has been promising—which we think will produce at least 260 hp. New safety features will include rear cross-path and blind-spot monitoring systems. Most, if not all, of these features will likely carry over to a similarly redesigned 2010 Dodge Charger.

No word yet on when the new 300 will be officially revealed, but you can expect to see it and the next Dodge Charger on dealer lots in 2010.

Chrysler brand will handle Fiat 500 in U.S.

The Chrysler brand will handle U.S. distribution of the Fiat 500 minicar, said Peter Fong, Chrysler brand CEO and head of sales for all Chrysler Group brands.

Fong said the 500 most likely will have a dedicated corner in Chrysler-brand showrooms. The limited volume planned for the 500 prevents creation of a dedicated retail network.

About 80 percent of Chrysler dealers now offer all three of the group's brands: Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep.

Fong said no decision has been made on how many dealers will sell the 500. The plan is for the 500 sedan to be built at Chrysler's plant in Toluca, Mexico, beginning in late 2010 or early 2011, says a supplier source.

Fiat prefers Mexico mainly because of its free-trade agreement with Brazil. The Italian automaker, which is the market leader in Brazil, plans to export about a third of the 100,000 Fiat 500s planned for yearly production in Toluca to Latin American countries.

Eventually, Fiat is expected to offer in North America the entire range of 500 body variants: hatchback, convertible, wagon, and a sporty version sold under the Abarth brand name

Rental Car Companies Cutting Chrysler Products

Chrysler's new owners have their work cut out for them. Even the rental car companies, which traditionally buy cheaper cars in high volume to keep their costs low, are buying fewer Chrysler models today.

Reuters reports, "Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group Inc (DTG.N) said on Monday it would slash its 2010 car rental purchases from Chrysler." The company operates Dollar Rent a Car and Thrifty Auto Rental.

Autoblog notes, "Previously, the company was contractually bound to ensure that 75% of its fleet was composed of Chrysler vehicles." That contract, however, was modified as part of Chrysler's bankruptcy proceeding earlier this year. With its new freedom to explore products from other automakers, the company plans to buy just 30 percent of its cars from Chrysler this year, with the largest share of its new fleet, 34 percent, going to Ford.

The news may mean that you're more likely to be offered a Fusion than a Sebring on your next business trip. It could have an impact on the next car you buy, as well. Reuters notes, "Overall, Dollar Thrifty expects to order about 90,000 vehicles under its 2010 plan, which would make the Chrysler purchase about 27,000 vehicles, or 40,000 vehicles less than they would have bought from the automaker previously." That's a significant hit to Chrysler's sales, which were already down more than any other domestic automaker (except for Hummer) this year.

Chrysler outfits show cars for SEMA in Vegas

Chrysler Group LLC will accessorize four vehicles for display at this year's annual Specialty Equipment Market Association show in Las Vegas.

The automaker is using parts from its Mopar aftermarket brand to trick out a Dodge Challenger muscle car, Dodge Ram pickup and a pair of Jeep Wranglers for the SEMA show that runs from Nov. 3-6.

The customizers at Mopar, under the direction of head Jeep designer Mark Allen, worked on the performance show cars.

They include the Challenger 1320, which takes a stripped-down, race-only, special-order version of the Challenger known as the Drag Pak that is designed for competitive drag racing. The street-legal design has a 556-horsepower Hemi V-8 engine, six-speed manual transmission and a customized exhaust system that makes a louder rumble by bypassing the muffler and pushing the exhaust out custom side pipes.

The car has Mopar police wheels with street-legal drag radial tires for a faster launch. The 1320, named for the 1,320 feet on a quarter-mile drag strip, dropped some weight with carbon fiber parts, including the hood and front spoiler and a bare bones interior consisting of Dodge Viper seats and a sport steering wheel. The rear seat, center console and radio have been removed.

The show car has nonmetallic yellow paint with matte black graphics.

The Ram Bianco is a more sophisticated pickup that has been lowered and has a carpet in the truck bed. It also is designed with white pearl paint, painted 22-inch wheels, a dual-exhaust system for the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 and contrasting white and black seats with matching trim on the doors.

There will also be two Wranglers on display. The first is the Overland that transforms into use for a campsite. The rear seats are replaced with a rubber floor, and mounted to the cargo rack is a two-person tent and awning. There are waterproof covers on the front seats and a power panel for all the accessories needed to camp out. To get to the perfect camping site, the Jeep has a 3-inch suspension lift to fit massive 35-inch tires.

The second Jeep is the Lower Forty, a two-door Wrangler Rubicon with 40-inch tires on 20-inch wheels, a feat that required the removal of a lot of body metal underneath the vehicle. The extreme off-roader has a new roll cage, and the spare tire has been moved to the cargo floor.

"We will gauge reaction to these vehicles and explore new directions as we develop Mopar performance parts and accessories for our vehicles," said Pietro Gorlier, head of Mopar service parts and customer care in a statement.

Under the new management of chief executive officer Sergio Marchionne, the automaker is putting greater emphasis on the Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge, which has been divided into car and truck divisions, as well as Mopar. Further details of how the brands will evolve and be marketed will be revealed Nov. 4 when Chrysler outlines a five-year business and product plan.

With only one all-new product for the 2010 model year, the heavy-duty Ram pickup, the automaker is stressing accessories as a way to freshen existing products.

2010 Chrysler 300

The 2010 Chrysler 300 should see no major changes. This large car shares its basic design with Dodge's Charger sedan. Available trim levels should continue to include Touring, Touring Signature, Limited, 300C, and 300C SRT8. All should continue to have standard rear-wheel drive. Touring Signature, Limited, and 300C will likely remain available with all-wheel drive. Touring versions should have a 178-hp 2.7-liter V6 engine. Touring Signature and Limited will likely still use a 250-hp 3.5-liter V6. The 300C should continue to have a 5.7-liter version of Chrysler's "Hemi" V8 with 359 hp. Exclusive to the 5.7 V8 is Chrysler's Multi-Displacement System cylinder deactivation. The SRT8 will likely continue to use a 6.1-liter Hemi V8 with 425 hp. The 300 Touring and rear-drive Touring Signature and Limited should still have a 4-speed automatic transmission. All others should use a 5-speed automatic. Available safety features should include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. Likely not returning to the 300 lineup is the Executive Series package that increases the vehicle's overall length by 6 inches. This report is based on evaluations of the 2009 Chrysler 300.

Chrysler Electric Minivan is four all-electric Chrysler Town & Country minivan concepts that has been unveiled by Chrysler.

Targeted for postal delivery use, Chrysler Electric Minivan has been showed off to celebrate Earth Day Celebration.

Chrysler also plans to submit an application under the U.S. Department of Energy’s Transportation Electrification stimulus program to get a grant to demonstrate the Chrysler Electric Minivan with the United States Postal Service (USPS).

Chrysler invented the minivan 25 years ago. More than 12 million minivan sales later, Chrysler today showed off four all-electric Chrysler Town & Country minivan concepts to the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) as part of the USPS Earth Day celebration.

Chrysler LLC, in conjunction with the USPS and select energy service providers, also announced that the company intends to apply for the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DoE) Transportation Electrification stimulus program for a federal grant, which would enable Chrysler to establish a nationwide demonstration fleet of zero-emission electric minivans that could be used by the U.S. Postal Service for mail delivery.

“With more than a 40 percent market share, our Chrysler and Dodge minivans continue to lead the segment we created more than 25 years ago,” said Frank Klegon, Executive Vice President—Product Development, Chrysler LLC. “Our ENVI electric minivan concepts illustrate Chrysler’s innovation with electric vehicle technology and show what the future could hold.”

Chrysler’s ENVI group leveraged the flexibility of its electric-vehicle strategy to demonstrate an all-electric version of its best-selling minivan. These electric minivan concepts are targeted specifically for use by the U.S. Postal Service for mail delivery.

“We continue to look for energy-efficient replacement vehicles for our aging fleet as we explore ways to reduce our transportation-related carbon emissions,” said Sam Pulcrano, Vice President—Sustainability, U.S. Postal Service.

Because robust grid integration is essential for widespread customer acceptance of electric vehicles, Chrysler has enlisted the involvement of key utility partners, including Duke, ConEd and DTE. Each has signed a letter of intent (LOI) with Chrysler to equip post offices in strategically selected regions of the United States with a charging infrastructure for the envisioned program. The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) also has signed an LOI to provide USPS integration tools.

“Our partnership is structured to easily expand into additional regions of the country as the scope of the project increases,” added Rhodes.

Earlier this month, Chrysler announced A123Systems as one of its strategic partners and production battery supplier for the company’s initial production electric vehicles. Chrysler LLC and A123Systems signed an agreement stating that A123Systems will supply energy storage systems for Chrysler’s first-generation ENVI Range-extended Electric Vehicles and battery-only Electric Vehicles. Based in Watertown, Massachusetts, A123Systems has announced plans for a Michigan-based production facility. A123Systems will manufacture Nanophosphate Lithium ion prismatic battery cells, modules and battery packs for Chrysler LLC. Advanced lithium-ion battery chemistry has the capability of meeting consumer demands for performance, driving range and durability.

Chrysler to Suspend Jeep Production

Chrysler Group LLC will suspend production of its popular Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited vehicles due to a shortage in parts from an unidentified supplier.

Chrysler will idle its Toledo Supplier Park facility in Ohio for one week starting Monday, the company said Friday without disclosing more details. The Wrangler has been one of Chrysler's best-performing vehicles in terms of sales for the year.

This is the second time Chrysler has changed its production schedule because of a parts issue. The auto maker also delayed adding a second shift to an Illinois plant by more than a month citing "continued stresses" on its parts suppliers.

Friday's announcement underscores previous reports that tension is growing between Chrysler and its suppliers. In addition to Chrysler's problem with shortages, some of the smaller parts makers are hesitating to commit to new vehicle projects, according to people familiar with the matter.

An auto company high executive who shall remain unnamed chuckled when asked about the competitive prospects of Chrysler:

"What's their market share, 7%? And what do they have to sell for the next two years besides the Ram [pickup truck] and the minivan? Their first new car after that will be the Fiat 500? How many of those are they going to sell? Fiat hasn't sold so much as a bicycle here for 20 years."

Though harsh and a bit off the mark (Chrysler's market share is closer to 9% nine percent), the executive's comments neatly summarized the challenge faced by CEO Sergio Marchionne and his executive team as they try to reestablish Chrysler as a credible choice for consumers in the U.S. market.

It won't be easy. Turning around car companies takes time -- three years to develop a new model -- and money -- up to $1 billion for a new car or truck and the tools and machinery to build it with.

Nelson of Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, LLP, announced today that the U.S. Bankruptcy Court approved the payment of $24 million for the wrongful death of longshoreman Richard Mraz. The settlement is believed to be one of the largest ever for the wrongful death of a longshore worker, as well as one of the largest settlements ever of an individual wrongful death action involving an auto manufacturer.

“Richard was a loving husband and father who was just 38 years old when he died,” stated Adriana Mraz, wife of Richard Mraz. “When I found out many people have been injured by the same defect, and some even killed, I was determined to hold Chrysler accountable and send a strong message to all automakers that they must put safety first.”

Naylor and Nelson, along with Scott P. Nealey of Lieff Cabraser, served as co-counsel in the action. They demanded that Chrysler post an appeal bond which guaranteed the automaker’s ability to pay the $55.4 million verdict awarded by a Los Angeles jury in 2007.

“The appeal bond was a key factor,” said Naylor, a 34-year maritime litigator. “Had we agreed to Chrysler’s request to waive an appeal bond two years ago, the unexpected bankruptcy filing this year would have left the Mraz family without a dime for the tragic and preventable death of its breadwinner, husband and father.”

“We’re gratified that the Bankruptcy Court has approved the settlement, and the action has been resolved,” stated Nelson, who served as lead trial and appellate counsel. “We hope that the new Chrysler Corporation will never put short-term profits ahead of the safety of its customers."

Chrysler Corporation (formerly DaimlerChrysler) appealed the jury verdict to the California Court of Appeals. In April 2009 the automaker filed for bankruptcy, staying the appeal before a hearing could take place. The automaker’s bankruptcy put the Mraz family’s compensation at risk in the event of a reversal or remand on appeal; additionally, it exposed the appeal bond in the event the verdict was upheld.

This summer, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court lifted the stay and allowed direct negotiations to occur with appeal bond issuer, Safeco Insurance Company. At the center of the settlement negotiations was the issue of how compensation to the Mraz family would impact Chrysler's creditors due to the structure of the appeal bond. Safeco posted an $81 million bond to guarantee payment of the judgment and post-judgment interest.

“Ultimately, the $24 million settlement offered a substantial return to Chrysler’s creditors while providing fair compensation to the Mraz family, our ultimate goal,” said Naylor.

The settlement was approved by Judge Arthur J. Gonzalez of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of New York, who is presiding over the Chrysler bankruptcy filing.

In 2007 a Los Angeles Superior Court jury awarded $55.4 million, including $50 million in punitive damages, to the family of 38-year-old Mraz, who died after being hit and run over by a Dodge Dakota while working in the Port of Los Angeles in 2004. Attorneys for Mraz – Naylor, Nelson and Nealey – successfully argued that a “park-to-reverse” defect in the truck’s automatic transmission caused Mraz's death. The jury found that the automaker acted with malice by failing to warn consumers of the defect it had known about for years and by conducting a “phony” recall that did not adequately fix the vehicle. Mraz left behind his wife and three children.

Chrysler Working to Make Fiats Fit for America

Chrysler thinks its future may be in a new lineup of smaller cars based on models from Italian partner Fiat. The question is how to make them for Americans put off by stiff suspensions, firm seats and — perish the thought — not enough cupholders.

The problem is further complicated because Americans generally are plumper and taller than Western Europeans, and they're used to driving fatter and longer cars on wider roads.

It's a dilemma faced by nearly all automakers as they try to hold down development costs by tailoring cars to sell around the globe. But at no company is the problem more acute than Chrysler, where a wholesale lineup change is needed quickly to boost sagging sales.

On Friday, Chrysler's board was to consider a new model lineup that would consist of reworked Chrysler products on the larger end and everything from mid-sized cars to minis built on smaller Fiat frames, a person briefed on the agenda said.

Through August, Chrysler's sales were down 39 percent compared with the same period last year, the largest decline of any major automaker. In the critical midsize segment, which often is top-seller in the U.S. market, the company this year has sold only 34,700 of its two entries, the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger. That's only 15 percent of the 238,000 Camrys told by Toyota, the perennial leader.

Chrysler Group LLC, the automaker run by Fiat SpA since exiting bankruptcy in June, said it bought out Mitsubishi Motors Corp. and Hyundai Motor Co. stakes in a Michigan engine factory.

The U.S. automaker took full ownership of the Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance plant in Dundee, Michigan, effective Aug. 31, according to a statement today. Financial terms weren’t disclosed. The venture, formed in 2003, has been making four- cylinder engines used in Chrysler vehicles.

Buying out the two partners clears the way for Chrysler to produce Fiat-designed engines. Fiat owns 20 percent of the Auburn Hills, Michigan-based automaker and can get an additional 5 percent by making fuel-efficient engines in the U.S., under terms of Chrysler’s U.S. government-aided reorganization.

Chrysler “probably intends to built Fiat four-cylinder engines there,” said Ed Kim, an AutoPacific analyst in Tustin, California. “GEMA is a decent engine, but with Fiat in the picture it makes less sense to continue to the GEMA relationship, especially since Chrysler and Fiat have been pretty public with their intention to incorporate small- displacement” Fiat engines.

Chrysler Group may incorporate Fiat's new MultiAir fuel-saving technology in some gasoline engines, Fiat sources say.

Fiat S.p.A. considers the variable valve timing system a breakthrough. The company says MultiAir improves power by about 10 percent and reduces fuel consumption 10 percent.

MultiAir's electrohydraulic command of intake valves increases fuel economy.

The MultiAir system provides direct control of air and combustion in engines, cylinder by cylinder and stroke by stroke, without using the conventional throttle. That saves energy wasted in traditional systems.

Fiat will offer its first MultiAir engine in Europe this month on the Alfa Romeo MiTo small hatchback.

The sources say Chrysler is considering MultiAir technology for these engines:

-- 2.0- and 2.4-liter four-cylinder units produced by the Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance, which Chrysler operates with Hyundai and Mitsubishi. The engines are used in the Chrysler Sebring, Dodge Caliber and Avenger and Jeep Compass and Patriot. MultiAir units could arrive in late 2011.

-- The Pentastar V-6 engine family now under development. The 3.6-liter Pentastar family will replace seven Chrysler engines. The new V-6 will debut next spring on the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. MultiAir could be added in the second half of 2012.

Chrysler's in a tough spot right now. The beleaguered automaker survived the Daimler fiasco only to be picked up by an indifferent Cerberus team before ultimately ending up in bankruptcy court. Chrysler came out of those proceedings with a new dance partner in Fiat, and while the new company has a healthier balance sheet, a lack of funding has left the Pentastar with a nearly empty cupboard when it comes to new 2010 products.

In fact, Chrysler's new-product roster for the coming model year can be counted on one finger. The heavy duty 2010 Dodge Ram arrives with new sheetmetal, a significantly improved interior, a new crew cab configuration, and upgraded gasoline and diesel engines. It'll eventually be followed by commercial versions, with model designations ranging from 2500 to 5500.

As for the rest of the lineup, Chrysler did the most it could with its limited resources. Among the running changes for the 2010 model year are an improved Dodge Caliber interior, an updated, smooth-hooded Chrysler Sebring (as if anyone's going to notice) and plenty of fuel economy-related updates. The Dodge Nitro, Jeep Liberty and light-duty Ram receive a fuel cutoff feature during deceleration. The Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot add entry-level 2.0L four-cylinder models that deliver nominal fuel economy gains (2 mpg in the Dodge, 1 mpg in the Jeeps). The 3.5L Dodge Journey, a car that we'd all but forgotten about, will also see tweaks that will allow it to pick up an additional mpg as well.

Finally, Chrysler hopes to entice buyers by making previously optional equipment standard for 2010, while also adjusting pricing. The Dodge Caravan cost of entry has been lowered by $2,180 to $21,800, giving families a budget-priced option in the minivan market. Oh, and one last thing -- a limited edition Dodge Challenger SRT8 will be offered in Plum Crazy for 2010. Now that sounds genuinely interesting.

The spectacular quad-turbo, V-12 powered, mid-engine Chrysler ME Four-Twelve super car has roared onto the scene to shine as the most advanced Chrysler ever built.
The ultimate engineering and design statement, and a brilliant example of the Chrysler Group's capabilities, the ME Four-Twelve will establish a real-world performance record for a rear-wheel drive, mid-engine super car and may also set a record for lightening-quick vehicle development. Taking less than one year to complete from start to finish, the Chrysler Group partnered with some of the best in the business to assist in its development. There are a grand total of 11 people working on the ME from Chrysler (out of about 10,000 at CTC, FREC, and JTE), according to press preleases. There are a handful of suppliers-let's just say under 10 that have admitted in the public forums (at least in the trade magazines and press).

With regard to the transmission research and development, in my opinion the most important piece of R&D, Ricardo is handling the "bodies" (meaning the people or "warm bodies") doing the work, under Chrysler direction and supervision. Approximately 30 people (2 from DCX, maybe ) would be involved with this work, including design, engineering, manufacturing feasibility, testing, and process.

History

According to Deutsche Press, around 300 Chrysler ME 4-12 were to be built each year, largely with carbon, aluminum, and other light-weight metals. Road testing was scheduled for late January 2004, with production rumored to start within two years. The car itself was being built in the United States by Metalcrafters, and we have been told that the lead engineer is from Chrysler and the lead suppliers from North America - and that this was the outcome of battles with Stuttgart, which wanted to use European suppliers and engineers. Most off the shelf parts appear to be from Chrysler aside from the engine. The transmission seems to be based on Chrysler, Mercedes, and other designs.The ME Four-Twelve braking system features massive 15.0-inch (381 mm) ventilated carbon ceramic composite disc brake rotors with six-piston aluminum mono block calipers for superior braking performance during all driving conditions. The composite discs are sixty-five percent lower in weight than comparable cast iron rotors. Wheels are cast aluminum: 19x10-inch front and 20x12.5-inch rear. Michelin high-performance radials are 265/35ZR19 in the front and 335/30ZR20 in the rear.

At just 44.9 inches tall, 78.7 inches wide and 178.8-inches long, the two-seat, mid-engine ME Four-Twelve was wind tunnel tested in Auburn Hills. The computer controlled active rear spoiler articulates rearward 100 mm to increase down-force to a total of 925 lbs. (421 kg) at 186 mph (300 km/h), while achieving a competitive coefficient of drag (Cd) of 0.358. All body openings have been optimized to achieve maximum thermal performance. Large vented front and rear wheel houses reduce lift as well as active and passive aerodynamic devices that have been implemented to provide stable vehicle performance at all speeds.

The interior is relatively spacious with 37.2 in (942 mm) of headroom, and 42.7 in (1085 mm) of legroom. A large glass roof panel extends from the windshield to the rear header. Passenger-side adjustable foot support helps keep the co-pilot in position during extreme cornering maneuvers.This vehicle breaks the mold of the super car genre because its packaging can easily accommodate drivers in a wide range of heights. Ease of access to driving controls was a primary focus. For example, there are steering wheel mounted controls, including a column mounted F-1 racing style paddle shifter with aluminum shift paddles and centrally mounted driver controls.

Styling was done by a young and friendly Chrysler designer, Brian Nielander, who normally designs trucks; he worked directly with engineers and aerodynamics experts to shape the interior and exterior and make sure that the engineers did not make the ME-412 uncomfortable. Wolfgang Bernhard, Chief Operating Officer - Chrysler Group, said, "It's everything we—ve learned about creating exciting, desirable automobiles. And, as such, it's not really a concept car but is, in fact, a prototype that will be road-ready by summer."

Technology

With a curb weight of just 2880 lbs. (1310 kg), the ME Four-Twelve has the weight-to-power ratio of 3.4 lbs/bhp — a new performance record. In actual Chrysler speed runs, the ME Four-Twelve goes from 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds, 0-100 mph in 6.2 seconds, and it will blister through the quarter mile in 10.6 seconds at 135 mph. The estimated top speed of the ME Four-Twelve is 248 mph (400 km/h). The vehicle is designed and packaged to achieve outstanding thermal performance under extreme operating conditions. Its large capacity, high-efficiency engine-cooling system allows this engine to retain optimum thermal performance — a key advantage in the super car arena.

The 7-speed Ricardo Double Clutch Transmission was developed specifically for this vehicle and features the latest double wet-clutch technology and electronic control strategy. The exclusive transmission delivers uninterrupted torque to the rear wheels with 200 millisecond shift times. The double wet-clutch technology appears to come from Chrysler. (An anonymous Chrysler employee wrote, "I cannot believe that Chrysler didn't get the credit for this transaxle!!! To be fair, it fits with its replacement by the junk MB controls and system.")

Chrysler, Fiat to share spotlight Joint exhibit is set for Frankfurt

Chrysler and Fiat will make their first high-profile joint appearance next week at the Frankfurt Motor Show, but the real collaboration on new vehicles is still 18 months to two years away, according to analysts familiar with the companies' product strategies.
While many industry observers have been anticipating the new Chrysler-Fiat product plan, that lineup is still under review by Chrysler's board of directors, including Chrysler and Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne. Details are expected later this year.

Last week, Chrysler said it would show in Frankfurt a new 2010 version of its Dodge Caliber hatchback that will be powered by a 2.2-liter diesel engine supplied by Mercedes-Benz and a freshly designed interior.

While the Caliber diesel is targeted at European consumers, the car and engine were in the works well before Fiat proposed a partnership with Chrysler, which was completed in June after Chrysler's 41-day journey through bankruptcy.

"Fiat hasn't been involved long enough to impact the 2010 model year," said Stephanie Brinley, an industry analyst at AutoPacific in Troy. "But it is significant that Chrysler's exhibit will share the same space as Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Lancia."

While Chrysler won't transform itself into a major European player overnight, Frankfurt marks an important first step.

Fiat has a direct incentive to help Chrysler grow outside North America. The fine print in the partners' operating agreement specifies that Fiat can expand its stake in Chrysler by another 5% by meeting several conditions.

That includes expanding Chrysler's presence in retail stores in Latin America and selling $1.5 billion worth of Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles outside of North America. Chrysler sales have a way to go to get to that level.

Between the global economic slowdown and the bankruptcy restructuring, Chrysler's overseas sales for February through August (January sales were not reported) fell 41% from a year ago to 80,687.

Chrysler To Report 15% Drop In August Sales

Chrysler Group LLC will report a 15% drop in its year-over-year U.S. August sales as the lack of inventory hindered potential purchases.

The auto maker is expected to say that it sold 93,222 vehicles compared with 110,235 in August 2008, according to a company official. Chrysler sales, however, did increase 5% over its July results. Full details will be released later Tuesday.

Dealers for the third largest U.S. based auto maker found that they couldn't fill orders as consumers flocked to showrooms amid the federal government's "Cash for Clunkers" program.

The program, which started in late July, offered as much as a $4,500 rebate for those who traded in their old gas guzzlers and bought new. Chrysler, earl on, matched the offer on all of its vehicles.

Demand quickly outstripped supply since most of Chrysler's plants sat idle for almost three months as the auto maker dealt with its bankruptcy process. Chrysler ultimately merged most of its assets with Italian auto maker Fiat SpA (FIATY).

"We are totally out of minivans and have only a sprinkling of the other models," said Joe Kramer, vice president of Armory Automotive in Albany, NY.

Chrysler is now using overtime and additional shifts to boost output as inventory levels now stand at an historic 28-day supply.

The company will offer $4,500 of consumer cash or zero-percent financing for up to six years on some 2009 models and consumer cash of as much as $2,000, on some 2010 models.
