Chrysler PT Cruiser Review

Cast your mind back to the original Fiat Multipla, with its unusual shape. People either loved it or hated it - the PT Cruiser evokes similar emotions.

The Cabrio version is no different and during the test week, it gained a lot of attention. However, not all interest was positive. Someone even went as far as saying that it looked like an upturned boat, so you can guess which side of the fence they were on.

But there’s no denying that it’s a head-turner, especially with the roof down. It sits some 62mm lower than the hatchback but has the same wheelbase and front track measurements and carries much of the styling from the hatch, which was updated last year and now features a smoother front and rear end and scalloped headlights.

The Cabrio is only available as a three-door, which is a shame because two extra doors would add greatly to the convenience factor. However, it isn’t feasible - the lowered height and the arc of the folding roof doesn’t allow for it. The compromise is extra-long front doors, which allow passengers to get in and out of the two rear seats. With the roof down, this isn’t too difficult but the seat belts are anchored to the inside of the car, almost adjacent to the rear passengers and again on the side of the front squab.

Chrysler Decides to Keep Making PT Cruiser

Chrysler has announced that production of its retro-styled PT Cruiser hatchback will continue at the company's Mexican assembly plant.

Since its introduction in 2000, more than 1.3 million PT Cruisers have been sold in more than 60 countries, the automaker says.

Earlier this year when the company was dealing with financial issues, the PT Cruiser was on the chopping block as Chrysler was trying to implement some cost-cutting measures to stave off bankruptcy.

There is no word on just how long the PT will stay in production.

It seems that fans of the PT Cruiser from Chrysler have nothing to worry about. The production of the PT Cruiser will resume at its plant in Toluca, Mexico.

Chrysler decided to kill production of the PT Cruiser from January to mid this year due to the dropping sales figures and lack of future plans to update the car. The Cruiser became one among seven models axed by the management of Cerberus Capital Management.

The other units killed by the management were the Pacifica SUV, Aspen SUV, Crossfire, Durango SUV, and the Dodge Magnum.

The PT Cruiser graced the public starting in 2000 and was instantly loved for its retro looks. Aside from the styling, consumers opted for this Chrysler for its very affordable price. The PT Cruiser became an icon of the industry with dealers being able to inflate the price because of the high demand.

Fast forward to today, the PT Cruiser’s styling is basically untouched. Some minor tweaking was done back in 2006.
